The most disturbing thing I've read all week

September, 29th 2009
If you haven't read this, go read it. Really. Go read it.
Girl-on-girl bullying or hazing is old news by now, for anyone who has seen “Mean Girls” or “Heathers” or “Gossip Girl”: popular girls organize a perfectly-coiffed and designer-clothed gang; fringe girl is targeted; bullies use their meanness and power to further marginalize fringe girl and reassert their status.

But news of a “slut list” at a...

Good optics/sound judgment FAIL

September, 29th 2009
Another brief highlight from the Labour Party conference-- Martin McGuinness, he of Sinn Fein affiliation (he's their deputy leader), apparently showed up in Brighton, at an event at the Grand Hotel, on Monday. Sinn Fein being the political party that, to put it kindly, historically has been associated with the IRA, of course, and Brighton's Grand Hotel being the site of an IRA bombing in 1984, of course...

Norman (Lord) Tebbitt, someone who I don't generally tend to be the biggest...

Brutal

September, 29th 2009
I recently called this one of the most brutal (early) takedowns I've ever seen.
But this is brutal, too. As some of you will be aware, today, Gordon Brown spoke to the Labour Party faithful in Brighton, and did an appallingly bad job by just about every account going-- of which this, written by my friend Alex Massie, is probably the most scathing I've read yet today. Hard to excerpt, because the whole thing is so bloody good:
Gordon Brown's speech to the Labour party conference...

Yeah...

September, 23rd 2009
Mark Sanford:
"I think if anything is off the table, it's that I'm not running for president. It's 100 percent believable now."
I love Mark Sanford, but yes, this seems to be the case.

One of the most brutal, early takedowns I've ever read

September, 21st 2009
This comes courtesy of Phil Klein at the American Spectator (I'm leaving out my usual italics so you can read it more easily):
There he goes again. Newsmax has published an interview with Mitt Romney in which he once again touts his big government Massachusetts health care plan as a monumental success:
"What we were able to accomplish was to get almost all of our citizens insured without breaking the bank and without having a so-called public option," Romney...

Holdover from yesterday

September, 19th 2009
This item from the Washington Times yesterday set conservatives abuzz with its hot headline, "Obama: Legalize illegals to get them health care." Ah, the quick and simple way to fire up the opposition... say, on the record, that "If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all." Stupid, stupid, and for so many reasons, it turns...

Lessons from David Vitter's text program

September, 16th 2009
I have a new post up at the HynesSights blog this morning: "Text-Ed for Political Candidates."
Here's an excerpt:
Last night, The Hill posted this little item, setting out some interesting tidbits about Louisiana Sen. David Vitter’s text/mobile/SMS program, on its website for all to see. Per The Hill:
a political operative recently received a text message from the campaign of Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), he of Deborah Jeane Palfrey fame. Vitter’s camp went with a...

As predicted...

September, 13th 2009
... the English self-congratulatory thinking about international football begins.
It's hard for me to believe the Beeb hasn't done a "story" yet built around idiot comments by English football commentators about how England will win the World Cup next year because they are the best team ev-ah.
Rest assured that when they do, I'll be sure to catalogue it for future reference like, you know, when England totally fails to win the World Cup in 2010.

Why does Scotland basically suck at football?

September, 11th 2009
After the Scottish football (soccer) team beat Macedonia 2-0 last weekend, as is typical when Scotland prevails in any sporting contest, hope sprang up again that we might qualify for the World Cup finals next year. Yes, yes, we'd have to beat Holland (not an easy task), but we were well on our way to competing for the holy grail of sport... or such was the general sentiment among a lot of Scotland supporters worldwide.
And then, the predictable happened. Scotland lost 1-0 to Holland. ...
