Touting Her Currency Conspiracy, Bachmann Insists: ‘This Is Not Michele Bachmann Being A Kook’
I guess on the plus side, she inadvertently admits here that she is a kook.

Death penalty for terrorists goes front-and-center in NY-20 race

March, 27th 2009
On Tuesday, voters in New York's 20th congressional district will go to the polls to choose a successor to ex-Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, who now occupies Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's old seat in the United States Senate. So, we have just over 72 hours before any efforts on the part of the candidates, and the party organs and committees cease to be truly useful-- and today the NRCC is putting the issue of the death penalty for terrorists front-and-center in the...

Dodd in bad shape

March, 26th 2009
Per RCP, a new CT-Sen poll (Research 2000/DailyKos, actually) shows Chris Dodd with... less than 50%. When paired up against Rob Simmons (the topic of previous posts here and here), Dodd garners 45% to Simmons' 40%. Yes, the numbers are different (and, on their face, worse) than those in the Quinnipiac poll noted in the first of those links from a few weeks ago-- but not much worse. Dodd seems pretty imperiled at this stage, and I can't see how it gets better from here....

Rick Santorum can't be pleased

March, 26th 2009
Rick Santorum is no doubt disturbed by something that happened today in New Hampshire: The state's House passed a bill to legalize gay marriage. That's a good thing in the eyes of Americans who, like me, have no problem with gay marriage and tend to struggle to identify real negatives associated with it. But a closer look at the political situation surrounding marriage in New Hampshire is not so much heartening as it is fascinating-- at least to me, who finds deviation from commonly perceived...

Wow... check out the big approval rating on...

March, 23rd 2009
... Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman:
Huntsman comes out of the 45-day Legislature with an 84 percent job approval rating, found pollster Dan Jones & Associates in a new survey for the Deseret News and KSL-TV.
As I've noted before, this is the governor of a pretty conservative state who happens to be pro-gay-civil-unions and outspoken on the environment (he's pretty green)-- and who got a solid score from Cato in its most recent round of fiscal ratings, while boasting a resume that...

Did Michele Bachmann really urge an "armed" revolt over climate change legislation?

March, 23rd 2009
So says Politico's Glenn Thrush, citing the transcript of a Bachmann radio interview:
"I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us ‘having a revolution every now and then is a good thing,’ and the people – we the people – are going to have to fight back hard if we’re not going to lose our country. And I think this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom...

Re: Mark Sanford

March, 23rd 2009
Dave Weigel has a profile of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford over at the Washington Independent today, which I strongly recommend you check out, not least because, if you're reading me, odds are you're someone who has some time for very fiscally hawkish individuals who don't mind ticking off large swaths of the political establishment, and big chunks of his own party. Mark Sanford is one such man.
He's also someone who, at least if you buy what Weigel has to say, is managing to entrance...

Is this for real???

March, 18th 2009
This sounds pretty ridiculous.
Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen was just a few paragraphs into an address at a St. Patrick's Day celebration at the White House when he realized something sounded way too familiar. Turns out, he was repeating the speech President Barack Obama had just given.
Cowen was set to speak twice at the White House on Tuesday night because there were two different parties going on at the executive mansion. No matter — he would give the same speech to the...

Ottawa!

March, 16th 2009
Those who follow me on Twitter will be aware that I had a little out-of-the-ordinary fun this weekend, and headed up to Ottawa to speak at the Manning Centre Networking Conference and Exhibition, to speak about the application of online technologies in the context of political campaigns, with co-panelists Stephen Taylor and David All. The public speaking went well (I won't bore you with the details, if you want to read about our panel, here's a generally fair and accurate writeup from Kady...
