David Miliband beclowns himself, demonstrates little familiarity with UK/US policy

April, 15th 2010
I haven't done much blogging or tweeting on the UK general election, due to take place in less than a month.
But today, I'm prompted to do some by this bit of ridiculousness, courtesy of UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband:
[media]gRCBVCI8Yek.tube[media]
Where to start?
First off, it's a bad sign for Labour that they're having to send out such an important guy in the Cabinet to campaign in Islington. I feel empowered to opine on this because, conveniently, Islington...

Herrera reprises Scott Brown's line

April, 12th 2010
Jaime Herrera's campaign notes that "during last Saturday’s Clark County Democratic Convention, [Denny] Heck declared to delegates that Washington’s 3rd Congressional seat 'is our seat, and we’re going to keep it in November!'"
Herrera's Scott Brown-esque response to Heck: “That’s a basic problem with Washington DC today. We have members of Congress on both sides of the aisle who are so wrapped up in their partisanship that they believe the seats belong to...

Today's Dumb Comment Award goes to...

April, 12th 2010
... Washington Senate contender, state Sen. Don Benton who is one of the myriad Republicans ostensibly running with the goal of replacing three-term incumbent and do-nothing Harry Reid Deputy, Patty Murray.
In a chit-chat with Politico's Dave Catanese, Benton apparently said this:

Benton warned that Rossi might find the 2010 campaign a less hospitable environment than he expects.
“Democrats have already attacked Dino. He doesn’t have any money in the bank,...

UW Frat Boys attract police in riot gear

April, 9th 2010
Here's a non-political post for a Friday.
The other night, power went out along Seattle's Frat Row. And the Frat Boys, it turns out, not doing anything to, you know, perpetuate stereotypes about Frat Boys behaving like drunken yobbos or anything, decided to build and light a bonfire. Out of couches. The police showed up with riot gear on. The Fire Department had to put the bonfire out.

Staff changes: Sean Salazar's Campaign Manager resigns

April, 9th 2010
Debra Churchill, Campaign Manager for Sean Salazar, one of the Republicans running for US Senate this year, has resigned from the campaign.
Here's the full text of the letter, as obtained earlier:

To my Dear Friend,
Sean it has been a great journey over the last seventeen months. Together we have given you needed name recognition throughout the GOP, spread...

Patty Murray's vulnerability

April, 9th 2010
Among the nation's political cognoscienti, there is a strong belief that while Republicans have a real shot at taking back the House this year (even if we'll have to work for it), the chances of us taking back the Senate are exceedingly slim. Part of the reason for that is the basic realization that not every incumbent Democratic Senator is Arlen Specter. Indeed, one of the Democratic incumbents that Republicans will likely need to beat in order to regain a majority in the Senate is...

WA-3: Pacific County GOP endorsing Herrera

March, 29th 2010
More good news for Washington State Rep. Jaime Herrera in her bid to succeed Rep. Brian Baird in Washington's third congressional district: The Pacific County GOP decided at its convention this weekend to endorse her.
The endorsement was unanimous, and followed a straw poll of convention attendees, in which Herrera captured 95 percent of the votes.
The motion to endorse was placed by Vince Shaudys, a South Bend community leader.
Those backing the move reportedly felt...

James Watkins for Congress memo: Inslee extremely vulnerable

March, 28th 2010
The race to replace Rep. Brian Baird in Washington's third isn't the only one heating up, it looks like. This weekend, I got word that James Watkins, a Republican running against Rep. Jay Inslee in Washington's first district, commissioned a poll on the race-- a poll that shows Inslee walking into his re-election bid extremely vulnerable. Here's the text of the memo I received:
The James Watkins for Congress campaign has just commissioned a 1st Congressional District poll from...
