Pete Domenici, Jr. responds re: "demographic" comment

March, 2nd 2010
Last night, I received a statement from Pete Domenici, Jr.'s campaign regarding the "demographic" comment he made in an interview with Jim Villanucci. The New Mexico Democratic Party suggestively asked the question as to what Domenici was getting at with that comment, though the content of my inbox would suggest it raised some eyebrows outside of their headquarters, too. In any event, here is the Domenici campaign's response:
"Barely has the campaign for governor left the starting gate...

Pete Domenici, Jr. raises money-- and eyebrows and questions, too

February, 27th 2010
Pete Domenici, Jr., jumped into the New Mexico gubernatorial race just a few weeks ago, and it looks like he’s in it to win it. According to Campaign Director Doug Antoon, Domenici’s team will release information about its fundraising to-date on Monday, at 6PM. The amount raised reportedly exceeds $200,000, all brought in, in about 5 weeks of campaigning.
But in addition to raising money, Domenici has raised some eyebrows as well—mainly Democratic ones—by virtue...

Tempers flare in Washington's third as Castillo takes a hatchet to Herrera

February, 27th 2010
The race to succeed retiring Rep. Brian Baird in Washington’s third district has taken a sharply negative turn with David Castillo, one of two leading Republicans vying for a spot on the November ballot, taking a proverbial hatchet to the other, State Rep. Jaime Herrera, in a robocall that has caused tempers to flare among political insiders in Southwest Washington. The robocall, narrated by a female voice who identifies herself only as “Susan” and put out on Thursday,...

McCain vid: Hayworth is a birther

February, 24th 2010
JD Hayworth has a lot of liabilities as a candidate. And the McCain team is certainly keen to exploit them.  Here's a web ad that apparently popped yesterday.

It almost makes you feel sorry for Hayworth... almost.

WA-03: Russell is out; will he endorse Herrera?

February, 23rd 2010
Early this morning, I got a tip from a very well-informed, well-connected Washington Republican who reads this blog: In the race to succeed Rep. Brian Baird, Jon Russell (one of the Republicans in the race) would be dropping out today. This has subsequently been reported widely on Twitter, and word is getting around the district.
What has not been discussed publicly, however, is a rumor swirling in GOP circles, which this reader filled me in on: Not only is Russell out, but he is...

WA-3 notes: Wallace out, Herrera in DC and gaining momentum (maybe), Castillo wants a moneybomb, bashing stimulus

February, 22nd 2010
It's been a busy few days here in DC what with CPAC and all. But, getting back to the business of writing about what's going on in the other Washington (the one that Dino Rossi likes to say is "green with trees, not green with money"), here's a quick roundup of news regarding the race in Washington's third.
Over the weekend, State Rep. Deb Wallace jumped back out of the race to succeed Rep. Brian Baird, sounding a party-unity theme (“We cannot let the 3rd Congressional Seat go to...

Stuff that doesn't help you win the center, beat the incumbent

February, 17th 2010
So, last week, we had some fun and games when a Tea Party candidate in Texas basically revealed herself to be somewhat 9/11 truther-ish (a possible understatement) totally blowing her credibility as a sane, non-tinfoil hat wearing individual, so far as I am concerned.
There has also been a spate of birther and truther bannings that top conservative blog RedState has been forced to carry out.
Last year and this year, a couple of self-described conservatives (nope, I'm not naming...

Welcome to the AZ-Sen primary, JD Hayworth

February, 16th 2010
If JD Hayworth thought that primarying John McCain was going to be fun, well, it looks like it may not be all that.
From McCainland today:
“This is Michael Medved for Townhall.com. The scandal-scarred background of former Congressman J.D. Hayworth makes him an unworthy primary challenger to Senator John McCain. His deep involvement in the Abramoff lobbying disaster, and six-figure payments to his wife more through a Political Action Committee, led voters to scorn Hayworth in...

Paul Akers set to air new ad

February, 12th 2010
Bellingham businessman Paul Akers only just jumped into the race to replace Patty Murray in the US Senate, but he seems to be going all in, and quickly. Yesterday, I got word that Akers had produced a new ad-- a positive, biography-focused piece. That ad is now up on his website, but I am told it will also start airing Monday on FOX News. Here it is:

My source says that avid FOX viewers in Washington could potentially see this ad a couple of times a...

Yet another Republican to enter the field against Murray?

February, 11th 2010
From The Washington Ledge, earlier this week (which I missed):
Over the weekend State Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, formally threw his hat in the ring to take on Senator Patty Murray this fall.

A couple of other state GOP lawmakers have also been mentioned as possible candidates. State Rep. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, told me this morning that he plans to run if Dino Rossi doesn't.
Good Lord. I can't even keep track of how many people are actual or potential candidates...
